How to hook up on Tinder with a girl? What are some great tips that actually work? What to text as a hookup line? This guide will give you all the steps and advice from the opener to close!

Sometimes, you are looking for that special someone to bring home to your parents. Someone you can see yourself in a long term relationship with: marriage, kids, a mortgage, eternity. Other times you want the exact opposite: something fun, flirty, consensual, and straight-up sexy.

It is true, there is a period in our lives (sometimes several periods) where all we want to do is “sow your wild oats” (ask your grandpa). This is generally a good thing as it helps us get very clear about our own views on intimacy, like what turns us on, what turns us off, and what we need to make relationships more eternal (if that’s even the end goal, of course). That means, you can get exactly what you want when you want it — no games, no guesswork, just straight hookups.

The good news is that wonders of technology — the best hookup apps and sites, especially — have brought to our doorstep all manner of kink and debauchery that we have an appetite for, and a means of consensually connecting with all the like-minded kinky and debaucherous people that we have the time for.

With so many options out there, you want to make sure that whatever you’re investing in — both time and money — is worth it. So, this begs the question: Do hookup apps really work? It depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re a college student desperate for one night of fun, a couple looking to bring someone else into the bedroom, someone older hoping to tap into their sexual side, or simply on the hunt for the casual, no-strings-attached night of sex, then you’ll find what you’re looking for once you download the right hookup app.

The hardest part is knowing exactly which one is worth the download, so that’s why we’ve rounded up a list of the best hookup apps right now as determined by the dating and relationship experts at Datezie. But first, here’s everything to consider when choosing the best hookup app for you and your lifestyle.

What to consider when choosing the best hookup app…

Your personal interests

In this case interest doesn’t just mean your kinks, fetishes and sexual proclivities, but also whether you are looking for a straight hookup app, porntastic entertainment or something in between. The various hookup sites have differing degrees of each, but most fall somewhere in between. Like, sometimes you want to have that burger you always order, but sometimes you want to see the entire menu, or to try a different restaurant, or eat at several restaurants at one time. Ok we’ll stop now, you get it.

Effort level and noise

There are some hookup apps that cater to a simple swipe, but there are others that take more time and engagement to get the experience you want. If you have very specific desires that are a little off the main script, then we recommend an app that caters to your interest and to potentially a higher level of engagement to meet like-minded people. If you are making a volume play, then the swipey apps may be your deal.

You will also discover that some hookup sites and apps are noisy with notifications. This may or may not be your style, but it is something to consider beforehand. There’s some wiggle room here, though: Even if the app has a tendency to flood your phone with notifications, you can alter your phone’s settings to limit notifications or turn them off completely.

Safety

Catfishing and scams are unfortunately part of this online dating world. You should go in with your head up and eyes wide open (so eventually, you can go eyes wide shut?), making sure that the people you are chatting with are exactly who they claim to be. If you feel like you are particularly vulnerable, read more about the relative safety of the apps we review and make a decision that is right for you. We Datezie editors want you to have fun, but above all, we want you to be safe.

Cost

Cost is of course a consideration, and you should operate within your budget. Many of the best hookup apps are completely free to download, but require you to pay for most features. More often than not, you have to pay the big bucks to really play … or to at least keep the conversation going.

We do see this category as existing between dating and entertainment and to some degree, education. We don’t mean you are going to get a Masters degree in BDSM, but we mean that you have a great opportunity to learn more about a community and a lifestyle that you have an affinity for, which can be valuable in expanding your sexual horizons and improving your life. All this to say, don’t miss out on an opportunity because of cost, experiment with a few sites and discover which (if any) are right for you.

Now that you have a better idea of what you’re looking for, keep reading to learn more about the best hookup apps — some for curious couples, thirsty singles and everything in between — chosen by the experts.

Adultfriendfinder is one of the largest and best known hookup and adult entertainment services in the world, and has features that will appeal to casual and active users alike.

The site has some of the familiar features of a dating site but veers quickly off into a world that is decidedly more adult, with numerous ways to interact with the community, ranging from chat rooms to blogs, live streaming and more. There is also a pretty comprehensive sex advice and education section for those who get off on learning (sorry).

Create personal hotlists of your favorite members and browse the site casually or dive right in to some of the more interactive features, many of which are decidedly gamified with a points system. You can join groups that cater to your specific interests, engage in photo contests, complete surveys that help you explore your interests, post suggestive videos and even engage with live web-cams. Oh yes, you can even find someone to hookup with, should that be your main modus operandi, via running pre-set searches based on kink or location or via browsing sections of the site that showcase top rated user profiles and photos.

Unpaid members will have a difficult time initiating contact with other members and maximizing their enjoyment of the site, so if you are going to join a paid membership is highly recommended

Tips on How to Get the Most Out of Hookup Apps

So, you’ve downloaded an app (or two) … now what? To take your online relationships to the bedroom, consider these tips and tricks from dating experts.

Make your profile as complete as possible.

We get it: You may be tempted to dive in headfirst and get right to work, but taking the extra time to flesh out your profile really goes a long way. Even if you’re just looking for a one-night-stand, it pays to put the effort into adding good pictures (a mix of face and full-body shots), accurate details about age, sex and location, and even a video, if using a hookup app like Flirt.com.

Know what you want and go for it.

Maybe you just want to keep your flirting virtual. Maybe you want to find someone to distract your mind (and heart) from a former love. Or maybe you just want full-on, wild sex with a stranger nearby. Before you initiate any conversations on the app, consider what you’re after and then make it clear to anyone you connect with from the very start.

Keep your eyes peeled at all times.

All the while, make sure you are still careful and protect your identity from potential scammers. Some users on apps, like XMatch, have been scammed in the past — or at least have shared those claims in the reviews — so it’s a possibility that it could happen to you. That said, never give your credit card information or identification numbers to anyone on any hookup app. Look out for any red flags — say, they won’t share their social media profile with you or the information they reveal in their messages doesn’t align with their profile — and proceed with caution when you meet up IRL for the first time.

Stick to your comfort levels.

Especially if you’re a first-timer, it may be jarring when someone — mind you, a complete stranger — sends a below-the-belt picture, no questions asked. Or skips the small talk and goes straight to, well, bedroom talk. Think about what you’re comfortable with ahead of time and then go at your own speed. You’ll find plenty of people on hookup apps that also want to take it slow (It’s a crazy world out there!), so this won’t hurt your chances of getting laid — it may even help you weed out any of the catfishers or scammers before you’re in too deep.

Let go and have fun.

This may seem like a given, but hookup apps arethe place to let your freak flag fly. Let go of the stress that dating often brings and just have a good time getting to know people (like, really get to know) in your area. Try not to judge yourself for what you do or don’t do. Who knows, along the way you may even discover something new about yourself.

If you’re shopping for a new TV, there’s a very good chance that whatever brand and model you settle on, it’s going to be a “smart” one. While some sets will only be capable of delivering a handful of apps and limited compatibility with other web-connected devices, there are several TV smart systems that take full advantage of the bevy of streaming media available today.

When it comes to streaming, app-casting, and overall interface, two names that receive a near-equal amount of fanfare are Google and Roku. For years, Google has provided the building blocks to smart TV brands from Sony to Hisense under its Android TV banner. Presently, the structural framework of the Android TV system is giving way for an all-new Google operating system known as Google TV. You’ll find Google’s latest OS running on Sony and, most recently, a new range of TCL TVs, as well as first-party Google devices like the Chromecast with Google TV.

On the flip side of the OS coin is our other friend in the streaming landscape, Roku. Over a decade ago, the Roku TV platform was contained to Roku’s lineup of streaming devices, allowing those without a smart TV to access hundreds of popular apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and more by merely connecting a Roku player — no subscription required. These days, the Roku TV platform extends from the company’s stand-alone gear to a host of smart TVs built on Roku’s streaming platform, with plenty of features, apps, and customizations to choose from.

Between Google TV and Roku TV though, which smart OS will get you the best of everything? As experts and devotees of both systems, we decided to break down each platform, weighing in on criteria like features, available apps, and picture/sound quality. Read on to see which system is our ultimate pick.

For this comparison, we tested Google TV with the Chromecast with Google TV and Roku TV with the Roku Streaming Stick+. Overall user experience may be slightly different depending on the type of TV or streaming hardware used.

Features and user experience

Right out of the gate, both Google and Roku TV platforms promise (and deliver) a user experience that is packed to the brim with personalization options. This is prevalent even from the moment you first log in to your new TV or begin connecting to your streaming device. Let’s look a bit closer at both systems, starting with Google TV.

Google TV

Unboxing my Chromecast, I was immediately prompted to continue setup using the Google Home app. This is especially convenient for those running their smart homes through a Google Assistant ecosystem, allowing you to simply add your new Google TV hardware to your list of existing devices. Better yet, if you’ve already been using popular apps like Netflix and HBO Max on your mobile device, Google TV will automatically add these apps to your Google TV device during setup.

One of our favorite features of Google TV is the way that Google intelligently groups all of your go-to subscriptions, movies, shows, and general watch history into one amalgamated home screen experience. Instead of a stagnant launch panel with all of your downloaded apps listed, Google TV kicks things off with a pre-selected tab called For You.

Here, you’ll find row after row of movie and TV show recommendations, categorized by genre and various niches. Best of all, these are all entries pulled from the apps you uploaded to Google TV during setup, meaning whatever is listed should be watchable (because you’re either paying for the subscription or using a free trial). For those wanting to experience Netflix or Hulu full-force, not to worry, you can still launch your individual apps, too. Additionally, you can also buy and rent movies directly from the Google TV platform.

As part of the Google Home integration, you can also interact with your Google TV product (and other Google-compatible hardware) using Google Assistant. For the Chromecast with Google TV, a handy Assistant button on the included voice remote allows you to call up specific movies and TV shows, ask questions, launch apps, and interact with other smart devices in your Google Home chain.

Another great Google TV feature is the ability to “cast” content from a mobile device or laptop to your Google TV hardware. While casting won’t completely mirror one device screen to the next, the feature allows you to start audio or video on one device and then quickly share it with another.

Roku TV

In terms of Roku TV features, it’s fair to expect plenty from a streaming-centric company that has been around for a long time. We’re pleased to say that the Roku platform definitely delivers … although the Google TV experience is a little more personalized to start.

When firing up your new Roku TV or Roku-powered device, most of your initial setup is handled through the TV or player. New users will be prompted to create a Roku account. This is how Roku keeps tabs of what devices you own, what apps you’ve downloaded, what payment methods you use, and more.

Similar to Google TV’s mobile setup, Roku TV automatically imports apps you’ve used on other devices to your new Roku hardware. If you’re a first-time user, you’ll need to manually choose which apps you want added during setup or add them later using your device remote.

Once your Roku account is created, you’ll need to link it to your Roku TV device. From start to finish, it’s a relatively quick and painless process. After some initial firmware updates (the same goes for Google TV), you’re ready to start using Roku.

Compared with Google TV’s personalized For You launch, Roku TV opts for a slightly more plain welcoming. Starting on the Home tab, you’ll see all of your pre-downloaded apps arranged in rows and columns that you can navigate through. Several tabs, ranging from Featured Free and Movie Store to TV Store and Streaming Channels, act as filters for Roku’s expansive library of content. Renting or buying a movie, TV episode, or full season stores the purchase in a My Movies and My TV Shows basket that you can access from any Roku device using the same Roku account.

Where Google TV builds its For You recommendations based on the apps you use and your viewing history, Roku TV is a bit less intuitive. Yes, Roku TV will be able to recommend certain movies and shows to you based on viewing history, but unlike Google TV, you won’t find recommendations sourced from Netflix and other streaming apps.

Quality

If you’re all about using voice assistants to complement your viewing experience, you’ll be pleased to know that Roku TV is compatible with all three major assistants — Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit — with an extra bit of integration thrown in for Apple fans (more on that in a moment).

With Alexa and Google Assistant, you’ll be able to use voice commands to launch and control a handful of Roku apps, although not every app features full voice assistant support.

If you’re a fan of all things Apple, Roku TV allows you to use HomeKit and AirPlay 2 to expand your Roku experience. Similar to Alexa and Google Assistant, HomeKit controls include play/pause commands, power, volume controls, and basic remote functions.

With AirPlay 2 support, you’ll be able to “cast” audio or video from certain apps on your iOS or MacOS device to your Roku TV product, similar to Google TV’s casting function. Keep in mind that not all Roku hardware supports a full HomeKit/AirPlay 2 experience.

Both Google TV and Roku TV offer a quick and easy setup process that you can walk through in multiple ways, intelligent and customizable features, and robust voice assistant integration. That being said, while Roku TV offers plenty, the endless options can be tough to digest. With Google TV, the default For You page pulls all of your subscriptions and personalized viewing together into one seamlessly curated launch screen.

Winner:Google TV

Available apps

The bread and butter of both streaming platforms, Google TV and Roku TV users have access to massive libraries of popular apps, as well as some third-party gems that may dodge the spotlight (an advantage that one system has over the other).

As of the writing of this competitive breakdown, Google TV is home to more than 6,500 streaming applications, featuring support for most major players like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, and more. You can add apps to your Google TV platform at any time by navigating to the Apps tab and selecting/downloading one (or several) of your choosing.

While 6,500 is nothing to shake a stick at, Roku TV users can choose from more than 20,000 apps. While about 4,500 of these are official Roku channels, there are pages upon pages of third-party apps available for download. If you’re a fan of a particular film genre (Westerns, film noir, foreign horror), we guarantee that there’s an app tailor-made for you and your niche in the Roku Channel Store.

In terms of breadth, Roku TV encompasses a wider gamut of both first- and third-party apps, comprising a library of channels that numbers in the thousands. Well done, Roku TV. You’ve earned yourself a point here.

Winner: Roku TV

Picture and sound quality

Currently, Google TV supports both Dolby Vision and Atmos, along with UHD viewing at up to 60Hz. That said, not every app in the Google TV lineup is compatible with today’s premium codecs. If an app that you love isn’t automatically triggering Atmos, there’s a good chance that a future Google TV firmware update may allow that app to properly handshake with Google TV, allowing for Atmos sound and Vision viewing.

You can adjust picture/sound settings for your Google TV product by navigating to the Settings tab and selecting Display & Sound.

So, what about Roku TV? The short answer — at least when it comes to UHD, Dolby Vision, and Atmos — is yes. You’ll be able to take advantage of both premium picture and sound codecs with several Roku TV televisions (mainly TCL), as well as the now-hard-to-find Roku Ultra. What codec versions your TV or device will support will depend upon the model year and running firmware.

For Roku TV products, you can adjust picture/sound settings by navigating to Settings, then selecting Display type (for picture) or Audio.

We’re giving this one to Google TV. While Roku TV products offer decent support for today’s leading picture and sound codecs, overall support for premium visuals and audio is a bit more across the board with Google TV.

Winner:Google TV

Bottom line

What

This was a tough call, but ultimately, we’re all about the up-and-comer. Yes, Google isn’t exactly new to the streaming landscape with Android TV being around for quite some time, but as a revamped TV streaming platform, Google TV is pretty incredible. From its highly personalized home screen to its intuitive Google Assistant support, Google Home integration, and picture/sound capabilities, Google TV devices are excellent stand-alone purchases and great additions to an existing Google ecosystem.

Don’t get us wrong, now — we have plenty of love for Roku TV. In fact, when it comes to available apps and overall voice assistant integration, Roku edges a little ahead of Google. That being said, Roku has been around a while, and, in some ways, we’re still asking them to surprise and delight us in the many ways Google TV does — with the latter having been around for significantly less time.

And so now the battle is concluded … at least for now. Congratulations, Google TV. You’ve won us over. Do continue impressing.
